Our Notes on Leather Care

We use a variety of leather in our products – from salvage and upcycled leathers reused and repurposed to our high end “Hermann Oak Tooling Leather. For more information about Hermann Oak Leather, check out the Tannery’s website at: HermannOakLeather.com, We take great pride in the quality of leather that we work with and will only use the absolute best that we can find.

Most of our leather products will require little more than a gentle washing with a damp cloth if soiled. Conditioning leather products when needed is a normal part of keeping the leather supple and will ensure that your item will last a long time.

A variety of leather cleaners and conditioners may be sparingly used if desired.

Avoid excess moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.

Avoid extreme temperatures.

Pets and animals may damage leather products if allowed.

Various types of leather and products require various types of care. Our products, when properly cared for, are made to last decades, at least. Life span of leather products will vary greatly on the care and use of each item.

Veg-Tanned Leather (all of our tooled leather and most of our custom dyed products) is a type of leather using natural ingredients and a laborious, traditional process that has less negative impact on the environment that other commercial tanning processes. Veg-Tanned Leather has properties that no other tanning process can offer, and as such is great for tooling and high-end artistic implementation.

Some of the leather we offer is moisture treated with an acrylic sealant, some of the leather is oiled. Acrylic sealed leathers require little maintenance, but offer a little less of the deep “look and feel” of leather. Oiled leather is a little higher maintenance, but gives the traditional look, feel and smell that people expect of leather.

Acrylic sealed leather will hold up against excessive moisture fairly well. It provides a slightly slicker finish, a stiffer feel and a slightly glossy appearance. When the acrylic finish begins to wear off, a thorough cleaning and reapplication of the finish may be desired.

Oiled leather requires more care (a light massage of leather oil or conditioner as needed, up to a couple times a year) but provides a softer feel, more flexibility, and a deeper dye.

If the finish of your leather requires some maintenance beyond basic cleaning, please contact us for further discussion.
