Behind the Scenes – New Product Development: Key Fobs / Lanyards

We’ve been researching some other types of useful items that we could make. One of the first items that Customers asked for over and over was keychains. This type of item is perfect for die-cutting, so we started researching a whole new way to create leather goods for us. It’s a different experience from hand cutting every piece, so there’s been a bit of a learning curve, but we’re excited at the possibilities that die-cutting provides!

We’re using odd pieces of leather for the testing and prototyping. This is what that process currently looks like.

The beauty of die-cutting is the uniformity.  The leather still offers some interesting variation, but every edge is perfectly straight and every hole is in the same spot.

We’ve experimented with different types of fasteners and different types of key rings and clips. This prototype is with a spring clip and a rivet. Each variable has it’s own set of pros and cons and only time and customer feedback will determine what works best.

We’re hand-dying small batches during the prototyping.

There will likely be a few variations available.  There will be simple, plain, inexpensive lanyards for the Utility crowd, and there will be some deluxe lanyards with better hardware, finished edges and some artistic embellishments. Stay tuned for updates on how these useful little products evolve.  As always, contact us for a custom order!
